Why Are Caramel Apples Associated With Fall/Halloween?

The story behind caramel apples is pretty fascinating! In the 1950s, a Kraft Foods employee named Dan Walker was trying to find a creative way to use up leftover caramel candies.

He melted them and created a sticky liquid. Then, he dipped apples into it – and the famous dessert was born!

But what does that have to do with Halloween? Well, apples are harvested in the fall. And the fun game “bobbing for apples” has been played during Halloween since about the 1800s!

And that’s why this caramel apple charcuterie board is the perfect fall or Halloween dessert board.

Supplies you’ll need

Remember, when you set up your dessert charcuterie board, make sure there isn’t any extra space. Fill up every space with something so that it looks like it is overflowing with caramel apple goodies.

Best Type of Apples For Caramel Apples

For this board, I suggest slicing Honeycrisp apples. You want them to taste slightly sweet so that they taste just as good with or without the toppings.

Red Delicious apples are far too sweet. By the time you add the toppings, the sweetness is overpowering.

Granny Smith apples are a bit too tart. They will need more caramel sauce to make them taste good.

There are probably a few other varieties that taste as good as Honeycrisp, but that’s my favorite one.

Here is what I used:

  • Hazelnut Spread
  • Cream Cheese
  • Snickers Bar

Servings: 25 apple slices

Equipment

  • 25 Bamboo Skewers
  • Cutting Board
  • Ramekins

Ingredients

  • 4 large Honeycrips Apples
  • 2 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1/3 cup Caramel Sauce
  • 1/2 cup Marshmallow Fluff
  • 2 ounces Cream Cheese room temperature
  • 1/3 cup Hazelnut Spread
  • 1 Snickers Bar
  • 1/4 cup Coconut Flakes
  • 1/2 cup Milk Chocolate Chips
  • 1/3 cup White Chocolate Chips
  • 1/4 cup Sprinkles

Instructions

  • Cut apples into slices (approximately ½ inches thick).
  • To prevent apples from turning brown, combine 2 cups of water with 2 TBSP water and soak apples for 5 minutes.
  • Chop Snickers bar into tiny pieces.
  • Meanwhile, combine marshmallow fluff and cream cheese in a mixing bowl. Mix on medium-high speed for 1-2 minutes or until a smooth creamy consistency has been achieved.
  • Remove apples from water and place on a paper towel to drain any excess water.
  • Put apple slices on sticks.
  • Assemble to board.
  • RIght before enjoying the apple dipping board, melt chocolate chips in the microwave by warming in 30 second increments and stirring each time until chips are fully melted.

Notes

If apple slices are too thin, the slice will break when putting on the stick. Don’t put all slices on the sticks. Be sure to leave some out for easy and quick dipping. For easy clean up, use cupcake liners to hold ingredients when possible.
