Tips for Perfect Rice Krispies Texture
If you are making your Rice Krispies treats from scratch, follow these tips.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that nobody likes a rock-hard Rice Krispies treat. I want mine soft, chewy, and easy to shape without feeling like I’m battling with a brick.
The trick is melting your marshmallows low and slow—patience is key here. I’ve made the mistake of rushing, and trust me, nobody wants stale treats. Use fresh marshmallows, too, because stale ones will give you stiff, hard treats.
And please, for the love of gooey goodness, don’t smash the mixture into the pan like you’re angry at it.
Press gently so you keep that light, fluffy texture we all adore. I also love lightly buttering my hands when shaping—no sticky monster hands, just perfect, smooth edges.
And honestly, don’t overthink it; even if your Frankensteins come out lopsided, they’ll still taste amazing. A wonky monster is still a cute (and delicious) monster.
Making Tasty Frankenstein Rice Krispies Treats
This is where the magic (and the mess) happens. I start by dipping my Rice Krispies treats into a gorgeous green candy coating—it gives Frankenstein his signature skin tone. Make sure every side gets covered because patchy green won’t do.
While the coating’s still wet, I add black sprinkles for that wild monster hair and candy eyes for personality. I swear, this is my favorite part because each one ends up with a totally different expression.

Some look sweet, some look confused, and some look like they’ve had way too much Halloween candy already.
Then, melt some black candy and pipe on stitches like I’m Dr. Frankenstein in the kitchen. The stitches always make me giggle because they instantly transform a green block into a goofy little monster.

Once they dry, I line them up on a plate and admire my adorable edible army!
Fun Variations to Try
If you’re like me, you’ll want to play around with these little monsters. I’ve made vampire rice krispie treats using red candy coating and white chocolate fangs. They looked hilarious and slightly terrifying.
You can also swap the green coating for purple or orange to create spooky monster cookies. Add edible glitter too—because who says Frankenstein can’t sparkle?

For hair, you could use crushed chocolate cookies if you don’t have jimmies handy. You can even make a whole cast of Halloween characters—ghosts with white candy coating, pumpkins with orange, and mummies wrapped in drizzled white chocolate like these Twinkie Mummy Halloween Treats.
