Easy Cleaning Solutions with Recipes Using Essential Oils

I want to challenge you this spring to trying something new. Instead of stocking up on over-the-counter cleaning supplies loaded with toxic chemicals, how about putting together a few DIY household cleaners that are all-natural, inexpensive, effective and smell great. It’s truly a win-win for your family.  Using our favorite essential oils, I will show you some of my all-time favorite recipes along with simple cleaning solutions to make them work even better!

All-Purpose DIY Cleaner:

Combine 1/2 cup white vinegar, 2 tablespoons baking soda, and 10 drops tea tree oil or lemon essential oils.  Mix these ingredients in a glass spray bottle then fill to the top with water.

To use this solution simply spray the surface you wish to clean, wipe, and allow to dry.  For extra hard stains, add a sprinkle of baking soda to the stain and scrub with a scrub brush before rinsing or wiping away residue.

This cleaner is a great option for hard surfaces like kitchen and bathroom counters.  The pleasant scent is a great bonus for making your home smell better.

Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent

Combine 1 cup washing soda, 30 drops of essential oil for fragrance and 1/2 cup castile soap into a 1-gallon container.  Stir until well combined.

To use this solution, simply pour 1/4 cup per load into your washing machine.

For stain removal, you can spot treat with the solution directly on a stain and scrub gently with a toothbrush for removal.

DIY Toilet Cleaner Recipe

In a glass bowl, combine 1 cup baking soda with 50 drops Young Living Thieves Blend.  Blend gently until no clumps remain and store in a glass jar or bottle.

To use this solution, pour 1 tablespoon of the mix into the toilet bowl and scrub with a toilet brush. Then pour 1/4 cup 20% vinegar into the toilet bowl and allow it to get foamy and fizz.  Flush for a sparkling clean toilet bowl.

It is important to use the 20% vinegar and just 1/4 in this solution as it will make sure it fizzes correctly to help break up stubborn particles.

Homemade Glass Cleaner

In a spray bottle, combine 2 cups water, 2 tablespoons white vinegar, 2 tablespoons rubbing alcohol, and 5 drops peppermint essential oil

Simply spray this on glass or mirrors and use newspaper or paper towels for a streak-free shine.

DIY Carpet Cleaner

Combine 2 cups baking soda with 30 drops lavender essential oil in a shaker that has a perforated lid (think old sugar shaker).

To use, sprinkle on your carpets and allow to sit for 1-2 hours before vacuuming.

Homemade Air Freshener

Add 1-ounce gin, vodka, or rubbing alcohol with 6 ounces of filtered water and 30 drops jasmine essential oil to a glass spray bottle.  Shake gently to combine.

To use, simply spritz 3-4 times in the room that needs freshening.
As you can see, we love using essential oils as part of our cleaning solutions to keep our home nice and fresh.  Cleaning doesn’t have to be difficult or costly.  Invest in a few great essential oils and simple household products to create a wide variety of cleaning products for daily use!
