What To Do With Clothing Straps?

Today I am sharing a simple way on What To Do With Clothing Straps – they come on every dress and top!

No one ever knows what to do with them. Should I cut them off…should I leave them on…are they hanging out the side of my dress? You get the picture!

Sure, when you leave the house they are nicely tucked in your top but as the evening goes on they start to slowly slip out. Before you know it…they are hanging out the arm hole…and you don’t know!

Well, I have a very simple Clothing Strap Solution you are going to love!

What are the plastic straps on dresses for?

For one thing, dress or top plastic straps serve a purpose. They are there to keep the clothing item on a hanger. Sometimes these straps are a clear rubbery material or a ribbon-type material like in the photo below.

I find these are usually there to keep the clothing on a hanger in the store. At times I cut them off unless it is a clothing item that is difficult to hang without the straps.

The ones I have trouble deciding what to do with are the straps that come on fancier items like a strapless dress or top. Even the popular one-shoulder dress needs something to help hold it on a hanger. So what to do…

It never fails that if you choose to leave them on they work their way out of the top or dress and hand out the armhole. We have all been somewhere and have seen that person…all dressed up and that white strap hanging out the back of her arm…oh my! Fear that no more!!

Here is my simple clothing strap solution! Lay the dress flat and smooth the strap along the inside of the dress. Secure the bottom of the strap to the dress with a safety pin.

No matter how much you kick up your heels that night the strap won’t budge…no dangling from the armhole either. When the night is over and you return home – simply unpin the strap and hang the dress/top back on the hanger using the strap! So easy!

How to hang a one-shoulder top or dress?

There’s nothing quite as chic as a one-shoulder top or dress. Unfortunately, they can also be a little tricky to wear. If you’re not careful, you may end up with a wardrobe malfunction. Here are some tips for how to hang a one-shoulder top or dress.

First, make sure that the shoulder seam is aligned with the center of the hanger. This will help to distribute the weight evenly and prevent the garment from slipping off.

Next, drape the garment over the hanger so that the shoulder or sleeve hangs down on one side.

Finally, use the clothing strap to hang the strapless side of the top or dress. With these simple tips, you’ll be able to hang your one-shoulder garments with confidence.

Should I Cut Off The Clothing Strap On A One Shoulder Top Or Dress?

No, never cut the straps off a one-shoulder top or dress. It is so difficult to hang these items without the clothing straps. Simply pin them down as I have done here so the garment can be hung up easily in the closet.

This is a perfect solution for strapless, one-shoulder, or any top that needs extra hanger staying power!

  1. Good idea. I usually just snip them off as I can’t bear it when they poke out like weird long ears under your arm, or on your shoulders, but then, like you say, sometimes you really need them for hanging afterwards.

    1. Thanks Julie! I cringe when I see woman with the straps hanging out of their dresses especially at formal events. I have cut many of straps off, but then there is no way to hang them back up. This works like a charm!

  3. I am making 2 of my older grand babies party dresses for Christmas. (I still have them as I needed to alter each dress to ensure a great fit.) I am adding the hanger straps but, I’m adding them at the waist level and, then I’ve added a “belt loop” type strap inside the dress where they can put the hanger strap up thru and then hang it on the hanger. This way, when they are wearing the dress, there is NO way it wil pop out the top of the dress as during wearing, it is only at waist level. (Hope I’m explaining this clearly)
This is even something you can do with purchased dresses. Move hanger strap to waist level. With ribbon, make a “belt loop”, then when hanging on hanger, run strap up thru that “belt loop” and all is solved!

    1. I’m glad you found this helpful. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen these sticking out of ladies dresses…kind of ruins the whole look 🙂 This works like a charm!

  4. Does anybody know where I can buy rolls of the clear clothing straps. I want to use them in a different way.

    1. I’m sorry but I don’t think this is something you can buy. I would ask at Joann Fabric to see if there is something there that is similar. You can purchase clear bra straps but not these cheap straps in tops.

  5. what about the ones that keep the sweater from falling off your shoulder like …Flash dance. So many cute free people sweaters but I need the ribbon to keep it in place. Is that tacky?
    Thanks Susan

  6. I was taught to wrap the loop thingies around a bra strap or under (depending or bra type) to secure blouse or dress. Keeps strap from being exposed and prevents constantly having to adjust during wear

  7. I bought a women’s top online and the strap was visible due to which I felt so embarrassed. The trips you shared with us is so tricky and helpful that now I wear the same dress with so much confidence. Thanks for penning it down.

    1. Thanks for sharing your success! I do this all the time when I don’t want the straps to show…works so well!
