How To Make Fresh Fruit Ice Cubes
Looking for a pretty way to stay cool on a hot summer day? Why not add a splash of color to your favorite beverage by making Fresh Fruit Ice Cubes that can be added to any drink?
Well, maybe not to a cola…but a clear soda or seltzer, fruit juice, iced tea or a cocktail! Pretty for any party or get-together with friends and family!
These patriotic fruit ice cubes, made with watermelon and blueberries, are fun to make all summer long. They are made into stars.
What is the best fruit to use to make ice cubes?
Most fruits freeze well, so pick your favorites or choose ones that complement the drink you place them in.
Small fruits like blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are perfect since they fit well into ice trays.
Larger fruits like strawberries, kiwi, or watermelon can be diced into small pieces to fit nicely.
You can also use citrus slices like lemons and limes or herbs like mint for extra flavor.

Ice Cube Supplies:
- Ice Cube Tray
- Cookie Cutter: If Creating Shapes
- Fresh Fruit
- Water
They can be made in any shape of ice cube tray, but I chose to use my Wilton Mini Star Silicone Mold, which I bought, to make these Patriotic Frozen Yogurt Stars. UPDATE: They may have discontinued this exact star mold. There are plenty of other options available.
If you are using the star mold, make sure your star cookie cutter is the same size as or smaller than the bottom of the same mold. Cut the watermelon into 1/4″ slices.
Use the cookie cutter to cut out watermelon {star} shapes. Place it at the bottom of the mold and top it with blueberries. Then cover with water and freeze. I recommend making these a couple days before your get-together or party, as you can only make six at a time.
You can also use a standard ice cube tray to cut fruit into small chunks or mini cookie cutters to create small shapes.
The star cubes are easy to remove from the silicone mold and can be kept in a freezer bag until ready to use. Perfect for all your summer entertaining needs!
Q&A To Make Fresh Fruit Ice Cubes
Can I use any ice cube tray?
Yes! Any ice cube tray will work. Silicone molds can make fun shapes, like stars, if you have a cookie cutter to match the mold size.
How far in advance can I make these?
It’s a good idea to make them a couple of days before your party or gathering. Once frozen, keep the ice cubes in a freezer bag so they stay fresh.
What drinks are they good for?
Fresh fruit ice cubes work great in clear sodas, fruit juices, iced tea, lemonade, seltzer, or even cocktails. They’re colorful and add a nice hint of flavor to any drink.
Do the fruits freeze well?
Yes, most fruits freeze perfectly. Just make sure to dice larger fruits into smaller pieces, so they fit nicely in the tray and stay evenly frozen.
Try these for your next party or backyard hangout. They’ll keep your drinks cool and extra special!
