Let me share how quick and easy this soup in a jar is to put together.  Here are the supplies you’ll need:

Supplies For Each Friendship Soup Jar

(Each jar serves 12 people)

1 wide-mouth quart jar with lid
1/4 cup beef bouillon granules
1/4 cup dried minced onion
2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
1/3 uncooked wild rice
1/3 uncooked long-grain white or brown rice
1/2 cup dried green split peas
1/2 cup dried lentils
1/2 cup elbow macaroni
1 to 1 1/2 cups tri-colored rotini pasta

Cardstock and color printer for the tag

Ribbon, twine, or string

Gift bow

How To Assemble The Friendship Soup Jar

To assemble your Friendship Soup Mason Jar Gift, layer each ingredient in the order listed above in a 1-quart wide-mouth jar.

Be sure to use a jar with a tight-fitting lid like that found on a canning jar or a flip-top jar. Firmly pack down between each layer. Seal the jar and then attach a gift tag with ribbon or twine and top with a bow.

I created this gift tag PDF that you can download. (at the bottom of this page)

To make it more durable, print the tag out on heavy paper or card stock. Once you cut out the tag, simply tie it onto the jar with ribbon or twine. These also make fabulous teacher and hostess gifts; simply add your own gift tag or sticker label that suits the occasion.

  1. I would put the pasta in a sandwich bag so that you can easily separate it from all of the other ingredients. you could even tie it with baker’s twine!

      1. The recipe and printable tag have been updated. Sometimes recipes need tweaked to improve the taste. I hope you will give it a try!

  2. Hello! Are you still having trouble printing the soup in a jar gift tag? There are two links in the post to print it out. I will make the links larger so you can find them. Sorry for the trouble!

  3. Hi I love this idea and want to make as gifts to place in my homemade grocery bags. I plan on making at least 5 soup jars can you tell me if buying the regular size bags of the ingredients from a regular grocery store will cover this amount or should i be purchasing from a store such as costco to buy in bulk?

    1. I don’t know for sure but my guess is that you might have to buy more than one package of some of the ingredients from a grocery store to make 5 jars. I would think if you bought them at Costco you may have a lot of leftovers. There is 1 1/2 cups of the pasta in each so maybe buy the pasta at Costco. Hope this helps!

  4. Hi Karen, It would be black pepper to taste. I think everyone has an amount of pepper they like to add to their foods…so it’s whatever you like.

So happy you like the idea for gift giving this time of year!

  5. UGH, Patsy, you are right! I don’t have the original file to correct it. I will have to check into somehow fixing it. Hopefully, no one will notice 😉

  6. If I wanted to make these jars using a pint mason jar (500mL) and just split the dry ingredients recipe in half, would the cooking instructions change?

    1. Yes and no – how you cook the soup would not change but the additional ingredients would change. You would only need to add half of the water, vegetable stock and meat to the recipe. This would change the soup significantly if the person making it did not know to do that. You could always make up a new sheet of instructions with those changes to make the smaller portion. Hope that makes sense.

    1. I hope they enjoy the Friendship Soup and the time it took for you to make each one a jar. Handmade gifts are the best! Happy Holidays, Debra!

      1. Hi Maureen,

The recipe and printable tag have been updated. I changed the amount of the bouillion to 1/4 cup. Sometimes recipes need tweaked to improve the taste. I hope you will give it a try!

      2. I crushed 12 cubes and it filled a 1/3 cup. I am not seeing instructions for the 28 ounce can of tomatoes. What point do we put that in?

  7. It appears in all the comments that no one has made this. I just did and I have to share my experience. The end product turned out to be brown mush that had the consistency of mashed potatoes. I even added at least 3 more cups of liquid to your 12 cups. The lentils took close to 2 hours to get soft. Should the rice and pasta have been cooked separate??? I feel like they just sucked all the broth away. In order to get the pasta done the heat has to remain higher and I lost a lot of broth that way too. I am open to suggestions. While this is beautiful in the jar……….. it did not win me over in the pot. VEry glad I tried it first before passing them out to friends. I must have done a lot of things wrong.

      1. Hi Cherie,
The recipe and printable tag have been updated. Sometimes recipes need tweaked to improve the taste. I hope you will give it a try!

    1. Hi Cherie,

The recipe and printable tag have been updated. Sometimes recipes need tweaked to improve the taste. Thanks for giving me your experience with the recipe so it can be improved. I hope you will give it another try!

    2. Cherie I just made this as well for dinner and we found the recipe to be delicious! You definitely must cook the pasta and rice separate as stated in the recipe. If you cooked it for 2 hours with the pasta in it the whole time the starches from the pasta would definitely thicken the soup a ton. I found that I had too cook the lentils and rice a little longer then the listed 25 mins but it was more like 35 mins.

Susan I did notice you say in the ingredients to use a can of tomatoes with juices but it never mentioned adding them in the instructions. I added mine when I added the ground beef. It was delicious and I can’t wait to give some out as gifts. Thanks for the great recipe.

  8. Having trouble down loading newer recipe’s instructions and printable. Of course its December 24th 2019. I planned on filling my jars today. No I idea how to solve this one…..

    1. I would think it could be kept in the jar for a month or two but would recommend making it before the end of two months.

  9. Looks fabulous but how do you print the tag? I signed up for the blog but no link for the tag. In the meantime I am going to make it for me, looks yummy!

  10. Signed up for the printable for this, but each time I found it under the Printables area in the website, it only links back to the same page where I signed up to begin with, no downloadable PDF or anything.

  11. Hi! I have made this twice and gift this every Christmas to all of my neighbors. It is a huge hit! I was wondering if you could adapt the recipe to work in the slow cooker? Thanks!

    1. I don’t have instructions for the slow cooker but basically, I think you would add the ingredients in a cover and cook for at least 6 hours. I’m glad you are enjoying giving it as a gift!

    2. Hi I would love to get the updated gift tag with the tomatoes on it. Can you post a link for me. The only one I can get is the one without the instructions to add the undrained tomatoes.

Looking forward to making here for my coworkers
