Summer Spotlight – View From The Fridge

We are continuing our Summer Spotlight {through September} sharing great projects from each of the co-hosts! This week I have the joy of casting the spotlight on great ideas for the home created by Katie at View From the Fridge. I spotted Katie’s talents from her amazing projects she would link up to Whimsy Wednesday each week. From sewing, crafts and home organization…she does it all with such flair! Katie contributes here every month – you might enjoy her Chick Wire Cloche, Monogram Cutting Board or her recent Fall Wood Pallet Art project!

One of my favorite project of hers is this Paper Cup Wreath! What an easy yet creative use for paper cups! It’s festive and bright…I love it!

Hello, I’m Carrie from Kenarry: Ideas for the Home. This week I’m thrilled to cast the spotlight on my friend, Katie at View From the Fridge. She always has the most creative crafts and home ideas, but what’s impressed me about her is how she manages to juggle it all with THREE boys under the age of four (including a NEWBORN!). I only have two sons in that age bracket and can hardly keep it together some days. My four year old was actually born on the exact same day as Katie’s oldest son. I was already enamored with all the fun ideas she shares, so when I read that on her blog AND then realized she also had a dog named Molly and lives in the Midwest like I do, I just knew we were kindred spirits destined to become blog friends!

Katie and her family live in a suburb outside of Minneapolis. A year ago they purchased an old home from the 1860s and have been slowly trying to make it fit their style. Surprisingly, her favorite colors in her home are actually white and grey. She says “I’ve done the red walls, the dark brown walls, the yellow kitchen, the bright blue bedroom walls in our previous places, and I’m done! With the exception of a few fun accent walls here and there, we’re slowly turning all of our walls to white or grey!” She started View From the Fridge as a way to document some of their home updates, but also found it to be a great outlet to share a lot of her crafty projects, too. Katie met her husband in college at the University of Iowa, and are huge Hawkeye Football Fans. They love to be outside, even in the Minnesota winters. They especially enjoy hiking, running (most of the time), skiing and snowboarding.

Great Ideas from View From the Fridge:

Let’s take a look at some of Katie’s creative ideas! As always, if you love Katie’s ideas, please click through to View from the Fridge to pin from the original source.

First, can I just say for a woman who’s banned colored walls in her home, she did some incredibly creative things with her sons bedrooms. The older two have the coolest navy and white herringbone accent wall. For her newest little guy, she created the sweetest nursery. I wish I saw this tutorial to make a DIY Nursery Mobile before I purchased one from the store to match my boys’ nursery all those years ago. This one is so colorful and full of whimsy. I just love it! Be sure to check out the gray and white striped accent wall she has in the baby’s room too.

Are you the type of person who sees something in a high end home store and thinks “I can make that myself for way less!”? Katie is too. She is so clever. Here’s how she made a Sailor’s Mirror for a fraction of the cost if you bought a new one at Anthropologie.

And speaking of things you see and think “I can make that!”, Katie actually saw a “Press for Champagne” button on the wall in the restroom at a local restaurant and decide to make one when she renovated her own bathroom! What do you think of this Unique Thrift Store Upcycle? Now if only champagne delivery was really that easy…

Aren’t these colorful vases the cutest? I love the shape and was surprised to see Katie made them from flasks like you’d use in a middle school science class. She was actually inspired to make her own Flask Vases after she saw similar ones at Room and Board for $160. Thankfully, if you follow Katie’s tutorial, you can make her thrifty version for only $14.

One of Katie’s goals this year was to organize one area of her home each week. She’s been sharing her tips and tricks whether she’s tackling big organization projects like her kitchen pantry or small ones like organizing her jewelry. Here’s a great example. Katie bought wire bins for her family’s command center, but wasn’t thrilled with them until she figured out a way to make DIY Reversible Bin Liners. The bin liners helped the baskets to become more functional (e.g. her keys wouldn’t fall through), and also more fashionable at the same time.

If you’re looking for a simple solution to help organize your home office, you’ve got to see how Katie gave these magazine holders a makeover.

Now if you REALLY want to get organized, you should see how Katie organized her craft closet. My craft supplies definitely look like her “before” pictures. Here’s the right side of her craft closet:

And now the left side of the closet. I just love how tidy and organized her fabric is now. I bet it makes it so much easier to find things when she’s ready to work on a project.
