Easy DIY Farmhouse Fall Decor Pillow

My kids are starting school next week and so, of course, I am thinking of fall decor. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year, okay, probably my favorite!

I love the crisp mornings, pumpkin lattes, farmers markets, soups and rustic home decor. So to get our home ready for fall I made this Easy DIY Farmhouse Fall Decor Pillow.

I love seasonal decor. I decorate our outside bench and door for every season. But sadly I have been lacking in the decorative pillow department. I find beautiful inspiration and want to create pillows all the time, however, I am not as good at actually doing it.

This time, I found the easiest way to make a seasonal pillow so I had no more excuses.

A few weeks ago for our family reunion, my mom made each of the grandkids a personalized shirt. They turned out so cute, and what did she use? printable fabric transfer sheets.

You can print whatever design you want on the sheet, then iron it onto your fabric and the design is now on the fabric. Brilliant! After designing these printable fall farm signs I knew I wanted to put one on a pillow so I rushed out and bought myself some of those sheets.

Seriously, I wish I had done this earlier. It’s the easiest way to make fun seasonal pillows. I bought a pack of sheets for $8 and there were 6 sheets inside them. So for just over $1.00, I was able to transform a plain pillow form into the perfect farmhouse fall decor.

You will need to do a few things to your printable design before you print it onto your transfer sheet.

*PLEASE NOTE: The design needs to be mirrored so it prints backward. I couldn’t find a way to do this in Acrobat Reader where my PDF opens normally, so I opened it in a photo program and was able to mirror it (or reflect as it was called).

Then I made the printable print a little bigger so it filled the whole sheet. I did this in Acrobat Reader by selecting the custom scale option and increasing it till the design was filling the page (ignore the fact that my design isn’t mirrored because I forgot to do that the first time, whoops). Then print it out on your transfer sheet.

Next, you need to cut it out. Don’t worry about cutting it out completely (that would be insane on this design), just get close to the design. The extra transfer paper around the design is clear.

Heat up your iron. You will need to make sure you don’t use any steam so emptying the iron is a good idea. Then iron the pillowcase to warm it up and remove any moisture from it. Arrange the cutout design on your pillowcase.

Lay out reverse image on pillow case.

You will want to iron on a hard surface, the instructions say to put a pillowcase underneath the fabric when you iron. Ironically I am ironing a pillowcase!

And since the pillowcase has a thick back, I skipped this part. Now iron your design while pressing firmly on the iron. Go slowly and iron for a long time! I went slowly back and forth for 3-5 minutes so it would be really stuck down.

Now you have to wait a couple of minutes until everything cools down or else you may mess up the design. So be patient (I really suck at this step but was really good this time)! After it has cooled, start carefully pulling the backing of the transfer paper off and reveal your beautiful farmhouse pillow.

And that is it! Put a pillow form inside your new fall decorative pillow, grab a pumpkin spice latte and enjoy watching the leaves falling.
