Metal Box Makeover
Hello!  Today I am excited to share an easy Metal Box Makeover.  I love this project because not only is it easy to do, it can make a great statement in any home decor, plus it is useful!
You see, I found this cool metal box in a trash pile for our city spring clean up…
It was looking pretty sad and rusty, but I knew that I could make it pretty once again!  So I snatched it up, before the metal collectors did, and brought it home.
First up was to use some steel wool and rub it down good to remove old rust and smooth it out. Â I taped the handle and, after this photo, the clasp as well. Â Then I gave it a good washing so I could paint.
I was lucky to have a good rust primer that I had purchased previously, to refinish an old wagon. Â I sprayed the box inside and out.
Then I sprayed it with red. Â I had also gotten this red spray paint for the wagon, which I never did get to…oh well!
I was loving the red but it felt a little plain. Â So I came up with this phrase, because this box was going to hold the “right stuff” eventually, whatever that stuff may be! Â I don’t have a use for it yet, but I am thinking one of my boy’s rooms may be the best place. Â I cut out a stencil on contact paper and sprayed over it with Krylon’s Island Splash, which I had on hand.
Then I added a stripe all the way around, and…
I am really loving it! Â A free project always makes me happy, and a useful one to boot! Â It doesn’t get much better than that.
This Metal box definitely has got the right stuff, baby…
If you are now singing New Kid’s on the Block, You’ve Got the Right Stuff, I am truly sorry…but not really really sorry, because I have been singing it ever since I designed the stinkin’ stencil…it won’t leave me alone! Â Serious flashbacks to my childhood. Â If you don’t know what I am talking about, well, that’s ok too.
Annoying song aside…I am always spotting old metal boxes at thrift stores and garage sales. Â I have seen them in all shapes and sizes, imagine what cute things you could do with them! Â Plus, it is a great way to reuse and repurpose!

Talk about turning a boring metal box into something fabulous! Love it!
Why do you always seem to find cool stuff on trash day?! I just find trash. Not that I am looking into people’s garbage cans – Yuck! Anyway, fantastic makeover. Love the bright red!
You made that awesome box from trash?! Love the red and turquoise color combination!
