How To Make A DIY Silverware Holder
Hello, it’s Kati from Houseful of Handmade! One of my favorite things about summer is BBQ season. I love having family and friends gathering around delicious food on a warm summer evening.
But last year as we were enjoying such an evening, I realized I a silverware holder would make entertaining so much easier. So this year I decided to make a DIY Silverware holder before the season has even started (it’s still too cold here).

I’ve seen a lot of different utensil holders. A few I almost bought, but they were all missing one thing: a place for napkins! I don’t know about you, but when I am enjoying a big, juicy burger hot off the grill with a side of watermelon I need a lot of napkins.
When eating outside, setting a stack of napkins on the table just doesn’t work. One little breeze and they would be all over the backyard. My solution, make my own DIY silverware holder with the perfect place for napkins too!

I wanted to make the silverware holder super easy to DIY too! Sometimes I just want a project that can be finished in an afternoon. And easy to clean. So I decided to use one of my favorite entertaining accessories: mason jars.
They are the perfect size for holding utensils and can be thrown in the dishwasher after each get-together so everything stays nice and clean. And really, who doesn’t love a good mason jar craft?!

I also used leftover leather pieces from my favorite wreath to finish off the DIY silverware holder. The leather adds a nice texture to contrast the wood while keeping the jars in place. And a nice leather handle makes is easier to carry your silverware out to a party outside!

Start by cutting out the following pieces from a 1×4 board: 1 @ 9 1/2″, 2 @ 3″, and 2 @ 6″.

Add wood glue to the end of the 9 1/2″ board and line one of the 3″ boards up so it is flush on the bottom. Secure with a nail gun and finishing nails.

Make a mark on the 9 1/2″ board 3 1/4″ in from the outside edge on each side. Add wood glue on the bottom edge of the 6″ boards and line them up on the inside of the marks. Secure with a nail gun and finishing nails.

Let the glue dry. Then sand and paint your utensil holder.
While the paint is drying, cut your pieces of leather. Cut 4 pieces 3/4″ x 4 1/2″ and 1 piece 7″ x 3″.

Using a small nail with a flat-head, attach the 3/4″ x 4 1/2″ pieces of leather to each side of the jar holder sections of the silverware holder. I used 2 nails on each side of the leather.

For the handle, shape the 7″x3″ piece of leather. I curved the center so it was narrower and easy to grip with my hand. Then I created two fingers on each end to give it a fun look.

Using more nails (or decorative furniture tacks like I did) attach the hand on either side of the napkins area.

Now all that is left is to add a couple of jars and load it up. And your DIY silverware holder will be ready for your next BBQ or party! Let’s get cooking.
