How Much Money For Graduation Gift?

Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding how much money to give:

  • What is your relationship with the graduate and the family? A close family member or friend may warrant a higher gift amount than a casual acquaintance. If you do not know the graduate well but have a close relationship with the parents I would give a higher amount of money.

  • What is the graduate’s financial situation? A student who is graduating with student loans may appreciate a larger gift than one who is starting their adult life debt-free.

  • What are the graduate’s future plans? A graduate who is planning to continue their education may need financial assistance more than one who is entering the workforce. Again, a slightly higher gift would be appreciated if your budget allows it.

  • You will also want to consider your budget and how many other graduation gifts you will be giving throughout the graduation season.

If kids {peers} are invited to parties, without their families, it may not be necessary to bring any gift or a $20 gift would be acceptable.

TIP: When my daughter graduated a few years ago, I had her create a list of names and the amount of money given to her so she could write her thank you notes.

I held on to that list so that when our friend’s children graduate I know how much I should give to their children. One tends to forget over time. Hold on to the list!
