You can always have taco seasoning on hand when you make your own homemade taco seasoning. Make it as mild or spicy as you like it!

The best thing about homemade taco seasoning is that you can make tacos whenever you want! Some taco kits don’t come with seasoning, and it’s frustrating to get home and realize you don’t have everything you need. With this recipe, every night can be Taco Tuesday!

How To Make Homemade Taco Seasoning

There aren’t many things that I prefer making from scratch. Sometimes it is just easier to buy it already made (like ketchup – it’s easier to just buy it!). Homemade taco seasoning is different. I love making my own blend and keeping it on hand at all times! This is because I can tweak it and make it as spicy and zesty and I want.

This recipe makes 1/3 cup of taco seasoning. That means this makes about 3 taco meals (since it uses about 2 tablespoons of seasoning in each pound of ground beef).

What’s In Homemade Taco Seasoning

The entire recipe is in a printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. Here’s what you’ll need to have from the store in order to make it.

  • Hot Chili Powder
  • Ancho chili powder – If you don’t have any Ancho chili powder, you can use regular chili powder instead.
  • Cumin
  • Salt
  • Dried onion powder
  • Oregano
  • Black pepper

How Long Does Homemade Taco Seasoning Last?

Since it is made up of spices, it will last about 6 months before the spices lose their flavor. If you don’t make tacos very often, write the date on the jar so you know when to make a new batch.

You can also tell when you need a new batch by smelling it. The older it gets, the less the spices will smell.

How To Use Homemade Taco Seasoning

Use 2 tablespoons in place of one taco seasoning packet for 1 pound of ground beef. To use the homemade taco seasoning, just follow these steps:

  1. Brown one pound of ground beef.
  2. Drain the fat.
  3. Return the meat to the skillet.
  4. Add 2 tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning and reheat till hot.

That’s it!

Triple the Recipe

If you want to make more so it lasts, triple the recipe. This will make 8 ounces or 1 cup of dry seasoning. Believe me, you will love how this tastes, you’ll definitely want to make plenty of it.

How To Make It Mild

If it’s too spicy, don’t use hot chili powder. Instead, use normal chili powder. This will have far less heat in it.

Ancho chili powder is a dried version of the poblano pepper. It has an amazing smoky flavor and adds depth to meats and soups. You will love how it makes your Tex-Mex meal taste!

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp Hot Chili Powder
