How To Grow Beautiful Flowers

One of the things I love most about summer is planting flowers – big beautiful flowers! I know that many people feel they don’t have a green thumb, but it’s really not that hard. I have a little secret that makes my flowers huge and bloom like crazy…and I’m willing to share it! {wink}

I love flowers so much that I overbuy them before I start planting finding myself looking for more places to plant them. I dig out more pots from the garage and sit them around…but wow, my yard looks incredible as summer goes on.

Besides planting flowers I also started a small space vegetable garden. I created this Garden Spiral a few years ago and love, love it!

So my secret is really a product – Osmocote! I have been fertilizing my flowers for nearly 30 years and they looked good but the year someone recommended Osmocote my flowers exploded! I will never stray to another product.

In my pots, I use a Miracle Grow Potting Soil that I replace each year with fresh soil.

Tips For Planting Flowers

First, if you have mulch brush it away from where you will dig the hole. Then {no brainer} you will dig a hole a little larger than the roots and soil of the flower you wish to plant.

Then gently break up the root ball with my fingers before placing it in the hole. This helps to break up the roots so they will grow out into the soil more quickly.

Once you have the flower in the ground or pot gently fill in the hole with the soil you removed. This is when I sprinkle on the Osmocote.

I usually give the container a few good shakes and make sure the flower is surrounded. If I am planting in a mulched area I then gently surround the flower with the mulch I brushed aside. Also, I did a facebook live video showing how I plant my flowerscheck that out here!

That’s it…pretty easy!

It is also a good idea to fertilize mid-summer for an additional boost.

Here are a few other tips for growing beautiful flowers.

Water often.

Flowers like lots of water especially on hot and sunny days.

Don’t let the flowers wilt.

I find myself out watering at the peak of a hot day around 4:00 pm especially if the flowers are in direct sunlight. Even if I watered them the day before they are bone dry and need a drink.

Flowers are made up primarily of water and if you let them get too dry they start to dehydrate and shrivel up. If this happens every day, then the flower has to take the time to rebuild and recover before it can grow larger. It is best to keep them consistently watered and fresh.

Pots and hanging baskets dry out faster than flowers planted in the ground. Water often to keep them hydrated up to twice a day. Watering in the evening gives the flowers a chance to recover overnight and doesn’t evaporate as quickly.

A Few of my Favorite Gardening tools…

Besides the Miracle Grow Potting Soil and Osmocote I would be lost without a good pair of  Garden Gloves and a good set of Garden Tools!

A Garden Dump Cart is also a must-have for yard work. Perfect to cart around bags of mulch, garden soil and flowers in the spring. Helpful in the fall when it is time to pull out dead plants and pick up the leaves!

This Deluxe Tool Tower Rack looks awesome for storing all your outdoor yard tools including winter shovels – I must get this! I know it seems a little silly but I do wear a pair of Garden Shoes. My garden shoes have a flower print and I love them!

I use Pruning Sheers to cut and bring fresh cut beautiful flowers into my home. And when you’re done with all the hard work, add a few Garden Accessories, Patio Lights and Decorative Lanterns! Then enjoy the yard!
