Shamrock Painting Steps

Just follow these steps to make your own raised salt painting for St. Patrick’s Day. I included some step-by-step pictures too.

First, trace around the image on the coloring page with glue.

Use a bottle of glue to trace on top of the shamrock.

Next, sprinkle the salt on the glue as you would with glitter. Tape the paper to settle the salt into any grooves. Gently lift the paper and shake to remove the excess salt.

While glue is still wet, sprinkle the shamrock with salt.

You don’t have to allow it to dry before you paint it!

While glue is still wet, sprinkle the shamrock with salt. Shake off excess salt.

Dip the paintbrush in water and blend with watercolor to soften. Saturate the paintbrush with watercolor. Then, gently touch the paintbrush to the salt. The color will spread.

Once the salt is sprinkled on the glue touch the paintbrush with paint onto the raised salt.

Allow the picture to dry completely before displaying or gifting.

Questions About Raised Salt Painting For Kids

If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments. Here are some questions that people have asked about raised salt painting crafts. I hope they help you too.

What type of salt is best to use?

I suggest just using regular table salt. If you use thicker sea salt, it will have a rougher texture and won’t be as easy to paint.

What can I use instead of watercolors?

Instead of watercolors, water down some food coloring and use that. I’ve even seen people use droppers to squirt the food coloring onto the salt.

How do I keep this from making a mess?

This has the potential to be a very messy craft – and your kids are going to love it! To contain the salt, I suggest laying the cardstock in a casserole dish while you sprinkle the salt on the glue. Another option is to just do this craft outside and let the salt fall on the ground.
