Patriotic USA Sign Display

Hello, it’s Kati from Houseful of Handmade! I am so excited to be here to share a super easy craft for you to decorate with this 4th of July holiday. I love patriotic decor and have been working on getting our house all decorated for July.

I have already made a few items for our mantle, but I needed a way to inject a little of our kids into our summer decor. So I made a fun patriotic USA sign to display some fun pictures of my kids this summer!

I love making decorations for the house, but I really suck at putting up photos. I am not sure why maybe because then I will have to update them (which I don’t so my house is full of baby pictures of my kids and photos from our wedding 12 years ago). I need to be better at adding photos to our decor so we can enjoy these moments in our kids lives.

I was shopping at Michael’s the other day and found these red, white and blue wood letters in their dollar section at the front of the store. They had all the letters of the alphabet, but I decided to just grab 3 to make a USA sign for us to hold some funny 4th of July pictures.

So I found my U, S and A but I needed a way to hold the photos. Sometimes I think I can get pretty creative about finding new uses for different items, but I honestly never thought I would be buying crafting supplies at an auto parts store. But these little alligator clips were exactly what I wanted to hold the photos on top of the wood letters and at 6 for $2.99 it was perfect for my photo clips.

The guy at the auto parts store was really nice and helped me find the alligator clips, then asked what I needed them for and I told him I have a blog and was crafting with them. Next thing I know, I am writing down my blog address so he can show it to his wife because she “Loves all the stuff on Pinterest”. Ha ha!

But back to the crafting…

Making these patriotic USA sign displays is super easy, you do need a drill and a pair of pliers/wire cutters, but after that you are ready to go! My wood letters were already painted so I didn’t even have to do that. I found some 16 gauge craft wire in the jewelry section at Michael’s and cut a 5″ piece for each letter. Then I used a tiny drill bit just bigger than my wire to drill a little hole in the top of each letter.

To secure the alligator clip to the top of the wire, I started by placing the wire into the channel on the bottom of the clip, but this wire is much smaller than the channel, so I grabbed my pliers and smooshed the channel tight around the wire.

It didn’t stay put, even when it was smooshed as much as I could, so I dipped the top of the wire into some Gorilla glue and then stuck it back in the alligator clip channel. As the Gorilla glue dries, it expands a little bit so it ended up super tight and doesn’t move at all!

Then I dipped the other end of the wire into the Gorilla glue and stuck it into the hole in the top of the wood letter. When the glue was all dried, it was a nice snug fit!

Sometimes when the Gorilla glue dries, you will end up with little white bubbles of glue, but they are easy to cut off with a knife (and actually these ones were easy to flick off with my finger nail, but sometimes I need a knife).

Now they are all done and ready for pictures. I really love easy crafts, don’t you?

You can also use these patriotic letter clips to hold food labels at your 4th of July barbecue. How cute would these be holding the title of your favorite 4th of July food for your guests? And then when the food is all gone, you can grab the polaroid camera and snap some pictures of the fun to display in your USA sign! I do love a multi-tasker 🙂
