This is a cute handmade Valentine’s Day Card/CD I am working on for my son’s classroom. What I like about this is that it is a non-candy card or favor! My son attends a school for children with special needs and when candy treats {or little toys} come home…most of the time I throw them out. What the children really like is music!

After some thought I came up with the idea to burn a CD of children’s songs and create a cute little card {or case) to put them in. The idea… “Songs From The Heart” Valentine’s Day Card!

Pin It

Supplies

Felt Sheets {I used red and pink}
Adhesive Felt Decorations {Mine are from Joann’s}
Stencils {number depends on the words/letters you want to stencil}
Velcro Dots
White Craft or Stencil Paint
Fabric-Tac Glue
Small Stencil Brush
Pinking Shears
Blank CD’s

First, I measured to see what size I needed to accomitdate the CD. Honestly, I just eyeballed it! I left about 5/8″ on each side of the CD. I trimmed the sides, with the felt folded, using the pinking shears. Then ran a thin line of the Fabric-Tac glue down each side about 1/4″ in from the edge gluing the sides together.

I then trimmed the top to give it an envelope look and placed a half of a Velcro dot to the flap.

This next step took a little bit of time, but wasn’t too bad. I cut the two stencil sheets apart to form my words “Songs From The Heart.” I attached each letter to a strip of paper using transparent tape. The paper gave me something to hold onto and secured the letters well. Then, I stenciled from the bottom up so that I wouldn’t be covering the wet paint with another stencil. I ended up switching to a smaller sencil brush once I got started. I also didn’t concern myself if I got a little paint on the outside of the letters…makes it look handmade, right?!

I then added these sweet little {Song Bird} felt cutouts! They were self-adhesive along with the hearts!

The winter months are a perfect time to host a Casino Party. Here are couple of DIY ideas to add to your fun theme party! This project doesn’t cost more than a couple of dollars – a deck of dollar store cards and some black ribbon.

Card Shark Napkin Rings

Supplies
Deck of cards
Black ribbon
Hole punch
Hot glue gun or Tacky Glue

Simply fan two cards together and glue with a little Tacky Glue or a hot glue gun. Then create two holes in the center with the hole punch a little more than an inch apart. After rolling your silverware, wrap the ribbon around the back and through the holes in the cards. Tie a bow and your done!

These Card Drink Markers fun as well. Again, fan out the cards glueing them together. Then use your hot glue gun to attach the card to the bottom of your glasses. You will not want to use Tacky Glue for this as it is harder to remove the cards from your glassware. The hot glue will peel off. I love how you can see the cards through the bottom of the glasses.

This is a project I did a few years ago – hand painting stripes on a wall. I have always stayed away from wallpaper as beautiful as some of it is. In my past house I did a lot of rag rolling with this Iridescent Pearl Glaze from Lowe’s. I would paint my walls a color and go back and do the rag technique in the glaze. It always had a nice subtle texture on the walls that I loved.

I didn’t really want that same look in this house, so I decided to use the same glaze, in a striped pattern, in this small area on the inside of my staircase. My colors there are silvery and mossy green in this area. I am loving how it all turned out. It really didn’t take that much time – I love a quick project with great impact! Look below for the how to…

First, I measured the wall width and decided how wide I wanted the stripes to be. I then took a small ruler and made tick marks across the wall – about 4 marks for each side of each stripe. I then took a yardstick placing along the tick marks to use as a guide for my painters tape. I did not draw lines down the wall with a pencil. The pencil will show through the glaze and not look very nice. I then taped the yardstick to the wall so that I had two hands to tape the stripes. I moved the yardstick up the stripe as I went along.

You want the tape to go on the outside of the stripe you are going to paint. This takes a little bit of concentration as I taped the wrong side more than once. When you are finished it should appear that you have thinner and wider strips. After the stripes are painted they will all be the same size. The thinner strips will remain the original wall color and the wider stripes will have the glaze. Don’t forget to tape the tops and bottoms of the stripes.

Here are the products that I used – Valspar Translucent Iridescent Glaze and a small roller. I also had a small paint brush handy for the few corners the roller could not reach.

I covered an old paint tray with foil so there was a clean fresh surface for my paint. I only added a small amount of a glaze at a time. You want the roller to only have a thin amount of glaze on it.

When wet, the glaze does not look very dark.

This photo shows the glaze in the stripes. I waited to the next day to remove the tape in case I need to re-roll anything…and I did in one stripe.

I love how it turned out. It adds a little interest without being overpowering. What I love about the glaze is it is highly reflective. As the light changes during the day so do the stripes. Sometimes it looks light and sometimes darker. It also has a nice elegant feel.

As you can see in this last photo I have a large space going up the staircase above that needs something. It has taken me awhile to decide on what that should be. I will share that in my next post!

As the night of our Ugly Christmas Sweater Party approached, I realized that the temperature was to go below freezing. I had always wanted to make these beautiful Ice Lanterns for a winter party…so this was my chance! They turned out to be beautiful and welcoming on a crisp, cold night!

I used a 2 liter plastic soda bottle and a 24 oz plastic bottle for the inside – cut tops off.

1. Fill the 2 liter bottle with about 1 1/2 inches of water and freeze.

2. Remove from freezer and place 24 oz bottle inside resting on the ice. Center the 24 oz bottle in the 2 liter bottle and use masking tape to secure in place. Make sure space between bottles is even all the way around.

3. Cut greens from the yard (I used Boxwood) and cranberries to fill the sides. Cranberries float, so place some in the bottom first and then add green on top. Add a few additional cranberries on the sides. When you fill the container with water the cranberries will rise to the top.

Fill with water leaving at least 1 in of space from the top for the water to rise as it freezes.

When frozen, remove from freezer. Lift tape and add hot water into the center of the bottle. As the ice melts a little, pull out center bottle. This gets a little tricky as the plastic bottles have larger bottoms than the sides. You have to work it! Run hot water over the outside of the bottle to loosen the large bottle. I had great difficulty pulling the ice lantern out of the 2 liter bottle due to the larger bottom. I recommend cutting it down the sides to remove it. Be careful - the plastic can be sharp! I also recommend having a set of bottles for each ice lantern you wish to make.

I highly recommend using a battery operated candle inside – the flame melts the ice! Make a couple of days ahead and store in the freezer.

In the end I was pleased at how the ice lanterns turned out. I also made smaller ones to line the walk with as guest approached the door! For these I use cottage cheese containers and small disposable food storage containers. These were so much easier to separate as the cottage cheese containers had a smaller bottom and the ice slid right out.

I recently hosted an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party. We have all seen the hilarious photos of guys wearing dated ladies Christmas Sweaters with accessories. Well, this party theme is sure to be a big hit with your friends…it was so much fun! Our party was an office party hosted in our home. The talk around the office for the past couple of weeks was…”did you get your sweater yet!” Prizes were awarded to the guy and girl with the best sweaters!

Because it was an office party all the food was provided by a caterer…I was happy not to have to make a thing! I still felt the need to create a fun “theme” tablescape for the buffet table! I just couldn’t help myself…this is what I came up with!

I was really at a loss on what to create for the centerpiece, until I came across these very cute sweater wine bottle covers! I just couldn’t believe how perfect they were. I have these large glass candle holders that I keep on my dinning room table and I knew they would be perfect to fit over them. I found mine at Marshalls, but I have seen them (in the store) at pier 1 and Bed Bath & Beyond. They could easily be placed on any large size candle holders or even used as intended…on wine bottles!

I bought these craft pom poms to fill my glass candle holders and then decided to sprinkle them around the center of the table. I covered the table with a red tablecloth and bought a couple of yards of quilting fabric. I chose this argyle print fabric…it looked sweater like and trimmed the edges using pinking shears. This is an easy way to trim fabric when you don’t want to sew the edges! I place three of these panels down the table over the red tablecloth.
